Tipping Culture in the US

In the United States, tipping is a deeply embedded social norm โ€” not just a courtesy. Service workers in the restaurant industry often earn a federal tipped minimum wage of $2.13/hour, relying on tips for the majority of their income. A 20% tip on a restaurant bill is considered the modern standard for good service. Tipping below 15% is seen as a strong signal of dissatisfaction.

Formulas & Calculations

Tip calculation is straightforward. Here are the formulas:

  • Tip Amount = Bill ร— (Tip Percentage รท 100)
  • Total = Bill + Tip
  • Per Person = Total รท Number of People

Example: $85.50 bill ร— 18% tip = $15.39 tip โ†’ $100.89 total. Split 2 ways: $50.45 per person.

10% mental math trick: Move the decimal point one place left. $85.50 โ†’ $8.55 (= 10%). For 20%, double it: $17.10. For 15%, take 10% and add half: $8.55 + $4.28 = $12.83.

FAQ

What is a standard tip percentage in the US?
In the US, 15โ€“20% is standard for full-service restaurants. 15% is adequate service, 18% is good service, and 20%+ is excellent. For exceptional service or special occasions, 25% is appreciated.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Technically, tipping on the pre-tax amount is correct. However, most Americans tip on the full post-tax total because it's simpler. The difference on a $100 bill is about $1โ€“2, so either is acceptable.
How do I calculate 20% tip mentally?
Move the decimal one place left (that's 10%), then double it for 20%. Example: $65 bill โ†’ 10% = $6.50 โ†’ 20% = $13. For 15%, take 10% and add half: $6.50 + $3.25 = $9.75.
Do I need to tip at fast food or counter service?
Tipping at counter service (fast food, coffee shops, food trucks) is optional and not expected. However, if you're a regular or the staff goes out of their way, a $0.50โ€“$1 tip is appreciated. Digital tip screens have increased counter-service tipping.
How much should I tip for food delivery (DoorDash/Uber Eats)?
Tip 15โ€“20% of the order total, with a minimum of $3โ€“$5 regardless of order size. Delivery drivers cover gas, car wear, and often pay for parking. Bad weather, large orders, or long distances warrant more.
What is tip pooling and how does it affect servers?
Tip pooling means tips are collected and redistributed among all tipped staff โ€” servers, bartenders, bussers, and sometimes kitchen staff. Your tip may be shared, so consistency matters more than targeting specific servers.
Should I tip less for bad service?
For genuinely poor service from the server, 10% is an accepted signal of dissatisfaction. However, if issues were in the kitchen (wrong order, slow food), that is not the server's fault โ€” tip normally and speak to a manager instead.
How much should I tip for a large group (6+ people)?
For 6 or more guests, 18โ€“20% gratuity is usually added automatically. If not, tip 20% at minimum โ€” servers at large tables have extra work and coordination. Split evenly to avoid anyone skimping.
Is tip included automatically for large groups?
Many US restaurants automatically add an 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. Always check your bill before tipping โ€” if gratuity is included, you've already paid and an additional tip is optional.
How much to tip hotel housekeeping?
Tip $2โ€“$5 per night, left daily (not at checkout) with a note saying "housekeeping." Different staff may clean each day, so daily tipping ensures your actual cleaner receives it. For luxury hotels, $5โ€“$10 per night is appropriate.
How much to tip valet parking?
Tip $2โ€“$5 when your car is returned. Some people also tip $1โ€“$2 when dropping off. At upscale events or hotels, $5โ€“$10 is standard.
Do I tip at a coffee shop or cafรฉ?
Tipping at coffee shops is optional but common, especially for made-to-order drinks. $0.50โ€“$1 per drink or 10โ€“15% is typical. If you're a regular, tips strengthen your relationship with baristas who may remember your order.
How does splitting the bill affect tip calculation?
Always calculate tip on the full pre-split bill, then divide the total (bill + tip) by the number of people. Avoid calculating tip on your individual portion โ€” it leads to underpaying. Our calculator handles this automatically.
Is tipping taxable income for servers?
Yes, in the US, tips are taxable income. Servers must report all tips to their employer and pay federal and state income taxes on them. The IRS requires employers to report tips if they exceed $20/month per employee.
How much to tip in other countries when traveling?
Tipping varies widely: in Japan it can be considered rude; in Australia/New Zealand it is optional; in Europe 5โ€“10% is sufficient; in Mexico/Caribbean 10โ€“15% is expected. Research local customs before you travel to avoid offense or embarrassment.
